Pruning is Essential for Grape Vines
Most people love gardening as it relieves day to day stress. They feel very good after spending some valuable time with their plants. Most gardeners are fascinated with grape vines. Everyone wants to know how to grow grape vines in their garden.
The very first step is to choose high quality grapes that you can grow. After that you need to choose the most suitable place for growing the vines. As it is known to everyone that grapes have a great love for sun, it will be better to get a place where the grape vine can get an enough light from the sun.
When it comes to the selection of the soil, it must be slightly acidic, well drained and deep. To increase the space, you must construct a trellis as it will provide support to fruits and vine. It is also important that it is strong and so long lasting. Grapes have a life span of over 80 years. During the first year and in the fruiting season grapes need lots of water.
After planting the grape vine, now it’s the time of pruning which will keep the plant organized. Pruning is helpful in producing good quality fruits. If one prunes at a wrong time then the result will be less fruit. The most appropriate pruning time is at the end of autumn to late winter.
Pruning can be done in various ways. But the best ones are the four-armed-kniffen-system and spur pruning. While pruning, try to remove the previous wood as it will enhance the new wood growth. Not a single pruning season should be missed as grapes must be pruned every year. Then they will produce quality fruit every year. Fruits develop from the new buds only.
The main aim of the first pruning is to produce a sturdy trunk and strong root system. The four-armed-kniffen-system of pruning is the best one as in this process 2 parallel wires are required that shore up the vine. One wire is 3 feet high and it is the base one; the other wire is five feet in height.
Once the grape plant starts growing, the gardener has to train the plant to grow along the wire. Shoots must be removed in the wires. So in this way the grape vine will grow well and this will result in the production of high quality fruits. You can eat them fresh or use them to make various kinds of products. You might even try making your own wine.
